Should we give money to panhandlers?

A friend of mine, Alan, grew up in a abusive household. He developed a drinking problem. One night when he came home drunk, his mother confronted him. He threatened her. The next morning the police carried him off. He ended up in a home for alcoholics. Then he ran away from the home and began his five years of homelessness.

When I see someone on the street, I always think, that could be someone’s Alan. Luckily, Alan returned home, got a job and moved out of his parents house. If the people he met when he lived on the streets hadn’t have helped out, he may still be homeless or worse yet, dead.
