Is Nirvana Essential to Buddhism?

When I think of nirvana, I think of the Fire Sermon where the Buddha talks about blowing out the fires of hatred, greed and delusion. The Sanskrit word for blowing out is nirvana.

Yes, I consider blowing out the fires of hatred, greed and delusion to be central to Buddhist practice.
